What's new in Live 10?

Live 10 brings a range of new features and sounds. The most immediately noticeable of these is the look. Live 10 boasts a clean and modern interface which is easy on the eyes, perfect for long sessions. The colour scheme can also be changed via the settings.

Live 10 Suite also includes a new range of effects and a powerful new instrument:

Wavetable - A new wavetable synthesiser with multiple sound and modulation sources. The simple layout is also very easy to understand, making it a great tool for beginners and veterans. Create any sound, from dirty basses, smooth leads

Echo - An hybrid delay bringing all the sounds of analogue and digital. Drive and shape sounds with its analog-modeled filters, turn up the noise and wobble for vintage imperfections, or add modulation and reverb to create diffuse soundscapes, wailing feedback and more.

Drum Buss - An all-in-one plugin for beefing up your drum tracks. Add drive, punch and modulate transients to add more (or less) impact to your drums. Side note: this sounds great on anything, not just drums!

Pedal - Brings the character of analogue-style stomp-boxes to Ableton. The three expertly designed circuit models for Overdrive, Fuzz and Distortion allow you to create some unique and full guitar tones. Paired together with Amp and Cabinet, you will have no more need for an amp.

Workflow Improvements

Ableton Live has always been an easy-to-use DAW. Live 10 has refined this to make this one of the easiest and quickest ways to lay your musical ideas down.

Browser Collections - Lets you tag your favorite samples, MIDI clips, effects and more from the browser into their own tab, for quick and easy access.

Note Chasing - MIDI notes now play back regardles of the playback position - no need to start at the beginning of the clip!

I/O Renaming - Instantly select the right routing by labeling Live’s inputs and outputs to match the instruments and hardware in your studio.

Groups Within Groups - Extended grouping capabilities bring a new way to organise your tracks. For example, under the master 'Synth' group could be Pads, Leads and Arps, and under those groups could be multiple synths. Each group also allow insert effects, meaning you can affect everything within, eliminating the need to route to a bus.

Capture - The ability to record and recover MIDI, even when you haven't clicked the record button. A continuous buffer is always recording MIDI notes for up to 10 minutes, meaning you won't miss out on that killer chord pattern you forgot after playing it!

Max for Live

Max for Live is a visual programming language which allows you to create just about anything you want, such as instruments, effects and utilities. The nature of the software also makes it very approachable, as there is no traditional coding involved (apart from the option of inputting Javascript whenever you deem appropriate).

In previous versions of Ableton, Max had to be downloaded as a standalone plugin which would then function within Live. With Live 10 however, Max for Live is seamlessly integrated into Live itself, making for a more efficient and powerful process. This means shorter load times, and less CPU usage.

New Sounds

Live 10 Brings a multitude of new packs, each containing a different and unique set of sonic qualities.

Build and Drop - loaded with ecstatic leads, enveloping bass, slamming drums and a range of rises, sirens and sounds effects.

Glitch and Wash - this Pack combines precision slices, jagged electronic noise and microscopic snippets of sound with warm ambient pads, textures and soundscapes

Drive and Glow - combines swirling synth textures, overdriven guitars and basses and pounding drums.

Punch and Tilt - a dancefloor-ready collection of sounds focused on machine rhythms, weighty bass and dark, hypnotizing melodies, textures and noises

Skitter and Step - contains the space where growling basses, rinsing pads and jarring melodies collide with jagged, broken percussion.

Chop and Swing - loaded with curated recordings and professional presets perfect for cutting up and re-combining into fresh new tracks.

Live Performance

Ableton started out as a tool for live performance, so it would only be fitting to include a comprehensive set of tools for this. After all, it's in the name.

One of the things that make Live so ideal for performance is its flexibility. You can design your own unique combinations of instruments and effects, and use eight Macro knobs to control any number of parameters.

On stage you can trigger, resequence and remix your music in real time. And use flexible MIDI mapping to set up almost any part of Live for hands-on tweaking with your controller.

You can even integrate Max for Live, to control visual projections or light installations in sync with the music, connecting to sensors and much more.
