FabFilter in recent years has set the bar for what an effects plugin should be - affordable, easy-to-use, lightweight and most importantly, great sounding. FabFilter has achieved all of this, and taken it to the next level!

Pro MB, A Difficult Task Made Easy

Multi-band compression is notoriously difficult to get right. The interface on most plugins can be confusing, and one small change can drastically change the sound. Pro MB takes all this hassle and throws it in the bin, while retaining professional sound quality and an intuitive, easy to understand interface. No more confusion.

An Actual Multi-Band

Conventional multi-band compressors usually take the frequency range as a whole and split them up into sections using crossovers. Pro MB allows you to create actual separate bands, with full control over the frequency range and position, and independent control over the settings for each band. Any audio that isn't selected is untouched, allowing you to get super detailed in crafting your sound. The best bit is you can create as many bands as you like, and are not limited to 4 pre-set controls that can be found in other plugins. There is of course a limit on how many bands you can create, however it is more than you will ever need (in a traditional sense anyway).

Independent Controls

Pro MB allows you to control every aspect of the plugin. For each new band you create, you have at your fingertips the standard controls such as threshold and range. You also have the option to compress or expand.

There is also an 'expert' panel which contains additional controls. The 'Band and 'Free' buttons select the frequency range of the trigger signal. 'Band' is the default setting which utilises the chosen bands on screen. 'Free' displays a slider, which can be compressed or expanded - useful for very narrow frequency band controls.

Pro MB features a Stereo Link Control. This basically controls the amount of processing in the stereo field. From 0% - 100%, the gain reduction is the same for both channels. Past 100%, only the Mid or Side will be affected. You can choose which with the selector.

Each band also includes a lookahead function, which can preserve transients at high settings (up to 20ms). This can however cause latency. At low settings the latency will be reduced, bu digital artifacts may occur, such as aliasing. To compensate for this, there is a 2x and 4x Oversampling option, but please note, this again may introduce latency.

Three Amazing Processing Modes

Pro MB includes three processing modes which offer different characteristics depending on the situation.

Minimum Phase Mode - This is the traditional way of splitting the signal bands using filters. It does not introduce latency which is perfect for mixing, however it can introduce static phase changes at the crossover frequency. This can be resolved by using shallow 6dB per octave slopes, however may not be suitable if narrower bands are needed.

Linear Phase Mode - This method guarantees a flat phase response, by splitting the signal into bands then summing them back together again. This also has the added benefit of offering an excellent frequency response, even at low frequencies. It will sound smooth and transparent, with no artifacts at the crossover frequencies. The only caveat is the introduction of latency, which is why this mode is best used for mastering purposes. It may also introduce pre-ringing, which is an inevitable side-effect of linear phase processing.

Dynamic Phase Mode - The is the default setting of Pro MB, and offers the best of both worlds. It will provide a flat phase response, similar to the linear phase model when no gain processing is applied, however, it will not introduce latency or any of the pre-ring artifacts found in linear phase, or any of the static phase distortion that can occur in the minimum phase model. Minor phase effects will only occur once there is some gain processing applied. This is possible due to intelligent dynamic filtering. This mode is suitable for mixing and mastering, and offers the most transparent sound of the three.

Pro MB is a complex and powerful tool, made easy by the intuitive interface which allows for simple control over each parameter. Each parameter can also be fully automated, with accuracy down to the sample.
