FabFilter in recent years has set the bar for what an effects plugin should be - affordable, easy-to-use, lightweight and most importantly, great sounding. FabFilter has achieved all of this, and taken it to the next level!

Saturn, Distortion that's Out Of This World

FabFilter Saturn has defined the saturation and distortion game. It is regarded as a multi-band distortion/saturation plugin. While other plugins affect the frequency range as a whole, Saturn lets you create up to 4 bands, with independent control over frequency range, volume, style, distortion amount, modulation and more. You can even mute individual bands. With these capabilities, the list of sound design possibilities stretch to Saturn and back!

Style that Takes You to the Outer Limits

The style button is the key to the sound, and features a range of high quality and carefully crafted distortion models. In total, there are 16 pieces of unique sonic content.

  • Tube emulations: Range from clean, high quality tubes to juicy or even broken tube sound.
  • Tape emulation: Subtle and warm to driven tape saturation.
  • Amplifier emulation: Smooth and crunchy amplifiers to screaming power amps, perfect for that grit on top of your guitar.
  • Smudge: This creative distortion algorithm smudges and stretches the audio in weird and unexpected ways. The Drive knob sets the amount of smudging/stretching.
  • Rectify: A crunchy combination of rectified sound, DC offset removal and soft clipping.
  • Destroy: A destructive mix of bit-crushing, sample rate reduction and clipping, for when your sound is too clean.

More features than real Saturn has Moons (and there are a lot)!

As with all FabFilter plugins, there are a whole load of features designed to make your experience easy, enjoyable and great-sounding.

To help get you started, included as standard are over 150 presets split into different categories.

Most prominently is the Drive dial. This is what delivers the power, and is used to dial in the amount of distortion you want applied to you audio. You can also pan the effect to the L/R, or even set it to Mid/Side.

The tone section is similar to a 4-band EQ. If your amp distortion is too harsh, reduce the high-end. If your saturation is too muddy, increase it.

The dynamics dial acts a a gate/compressor. Moving it to the right squashes the sound, adding heavy compression and increasing the intensity of the sound. Comparatively, moving it to the left gates the effect, preserving transients - ideal for percussion.

The Feedback dial sets the level of feedback for the band, which feeds the processed audio back into the input of the band. The Feedback Frequency dial sets the ringing frequency of the feedback loop. You can simply compare this to the distance of a microphone which picks up the signal of an amplifier that outputs its own signal: the closer the mic gets to the speaker, the higher the ringing frequency.

All of this is accompanied by a spectrum analyser in the background, so you can visualise all changes, and all of this can be independently controlled with each frequency band!

A Titan of a Modulation Engine

FabFilter's modulation capabilities are quite powerful, even though they are so easy to use. Utilising the what-you-use-is-what-you-see concept, you only see what you are modulating, so there are no unused dials or buttons cluttering the screen.

The modulators include:

  • XLFO - An LFO that can also be used as a step-sequencer and arpeggiator. This can be tempo synced to the host BPM, or free-dialled.
  • ENV Generator - This lets you create an ADSR envelope, which is triggered by MIDI inputs.
  • ENV Follower - Allows you to follow the envelope of an external source, audio for example will create some weird textures.
  • XY Controller - Allow you to apply two effects on an XY axis. This is great if you have a touch-screen controller, or keyboard with a joystick input.

Almost every parameter can be modulated, even other modulators, and using the drag and drop feature, it's so easy to do this! The sky really is the limit when it comes to sound creation.
