FabFilter Volcano 3 is a filter like no other. While it retains all the functionality of any other filter, it offers a ton of modulation options to warp and sculpt your sound as you like, all while offering one of, if not the best possible sound quality of any filter plugin.
To get you started, there are nearly 300 presets included covering all sort of sounds, from standard high and low pass filters, gritty classic emulations, and wild modulating effects.
A Filter like No Other
FabFilter Volcano 2 CAN be used like any other filter ever. It features a Lowpass, Bandpass and Highpass curve, each with independent control such as bandwidth, all while performing to FabFilter's renowned sound quality. This is where the similarities stop.
You can enter up to four different filter types in the same window. This alone is a sound designers dream. Each filter source can be independently controlled, or glued together. This allows you to modulate settings on more than one source at the same time.
Simple controls include the dB curve for each filter, the filter style - from smooth to aggressive, bandwidth, pan, and mid/side / L/R processing.
Where it starts to get interesting is the modulation effects. Volcano features what it calls an XFLO. This is essentially an LFO, which can also be used as a 16 step sequencer. The LFO portion allows you to apply a range of editable patterns to any parameter in the filter, from Q, to cutoff to pan. The rate can be controlled freely, or by syncing to the host tempo.
The Step sequencer is used in the same way. Steps can be added or detracted to create funky waveforms, and is controlled in the same way.
The Envelope Generator creates an ADSR Envelope, which can be applied to any parameter. This will be triggered via MIDI.
All these modulation effects can be applied to EVERYTHING. This includes other modulation effects - if you want to use an LFO to modulate an LFO, go ahead.
Non-linear, vintage filters
Volcano 3 contains four analogue-sounding filters with flexible routing, each offering many filter shapes including non-linear bell and shelf filters. Different filter styles offer saturation and self-oscillation at high peak settings, just like classic, vintage filters.
Intuitive Interface
Volcano 3 features a modern and sleek user interface, which has been designed to be as intuative as possible. It uses a "what-you-use-is-what-you-see concept" which means that only the parameters you are using or controlling show on the interface. Not using an LFO? It won't be made visible until activated.
In terms of applying an effect to a parameter, it couldn't be easier. Simply drag the chosen effect onto the chosen parameter. That's it. You can also control the mix of the effect via the slider in the modulation window.
