Ableton is one of the most popular DAWs in the music industry, with a huge following and user base spanning from artists like Deadmau5, Flume, Diplo and many more.
What is Ableton Live?
Ableton offers three versions of their software. with varying differences in functionality and content, and are available as a serial download or as a boxed copy.
Live Intro – £69/89
Intro is the most basic version of Live, however this doesn’t mean a compromise on sound quality or content.
With Intro, you get everything you need to start making music. The engine is the same as every other version of Live, offering the same great sound quality and efficiency as the more expensive models. 16 audio and MIDI tracks let you lay down your drum, guitar or synth tracks with ease, and it even includes the new ‘Capture’ feature found in Live 10.
If you find that the included instruments and effects aren’t enough, don’t worry, Intro offers full support for third-party VST plugins and effects to compliment the 5GB of included sound.
Live Intro is a great choice for beginners looking to get into music production, and is an easy way to learn all the terminology through practice that is involved with it.
Live Standard – £319/£359
Standard sits right in the middle of the three versions of Live, offering a great value to content ratio.
Live standard gives you unlimited audio and MIDI tracks to play with, as well as 5 instruments and 34 audio effects. Also included are 10GB of sounds, with many essentials such as a detailed grand piano, drums, guitar & bass samples and vinyl classics.
Standard along with Suite also feature Live’s powerful warp modes.
This version is a great all-rounder, and is perfect for anybody with an interest in music production. If you find yourself wanting more, upgrades to Suite are also available.
Live Suite – £539/£579
Suite is the full-featured version of Live, and includes all effects & instruments Ableton has to offer. It also comes with 70GB of sound content, with even more available to purchase in addition to this. Also included with Suite is Max for Live, a visual programming language which enables you to create any audio or visual content you can think of.
Suite is perfect for existing Ableton users looking to get more out of their software, or for producers looking for a change to their existing DAW. This is not to say it’s a great choice for beginners though – if you’re committed to learning music production, or just love making tunes Suite will offer everything you need and more.
Push 2 – £599
Push 2 is Ableton’s second piece of control hardware, and improves upon the already astounding Push 1.
Push aims to take your focus away from the computer screen for a more hands-on approach to composing and recording, and so far have been successful. Push seamlessly integrates into Live, and allows you to create tracks from scratch without ever touching the mouse. You can create tracks, automate parameters (with internal and third-party plugins), and record live via the touch pads.

Ableton offers a range of upgrades to Live 10 at a discounted price, for existing Ableton users. They also offer educational discounts for students and staff, as well as multi-seat license for academic institutions.
