FabFilter in recent years has set the bar for what an effects plugin should be - affordable, easy-to-use, lightweight and most importantly, great sounding. FabFilter has achieved all of this, and taken it to the next level!

Pro Q2, The Only EQ you will EVER Need

FabFilter Pro Q2 is the pinnacle of software EQ's, and is regarded as one of the best on the market currently. Don't believe it? Just look and the never ending stream of awards. Pro Q2 offers the highest in sound quality and usability, while being very CPU efficient - twice as efficient as the original Pro Q.

High quality means HIGH quality. Pro Q2 is one of the most transparent sounding EQ's money can buy. When placed on a track, there is no colouration of the source, no ring, and no distortion, even when the gain pushed to the limit. The only distortion that you will hear will be from the track clipping itself, not the EQ.

When it comes to Features, Pro Q2 has no Equal.

Pro Q2 holds a range of features that just aren't found in other plugins. The first of these is a simple but useful one - the ability to resize the window. This will greatly improve usability on a small laptop screen, to a large desktop monitor. It can also be placed in full screen mode, for multi-monitor setups and extra detail.

Pro Q2 allows for up to 24 bands of EQ, each one with independent control, both internally and with MIDI Learn, over every parameter. Some may call this overkill, but the sound design possibilities this will provide are endless. Each band has 6 filter types - Shelf (High/Low), Cut (High/Low), Notch, Bandpass, Bell and Tilt Shelf. Each EQ band also hold independent filter slopes, up to 96dB per octave. This allows you to get surgical in your editing.

Mid/Side and L/R capabilities are present, for those pesky sounds stuck in mono or stereo. Further repair features include the spectrum analyser, which can show the audio pre and post EQ, with adjustable resolution and range. A feature unique to Pro Q2 is the spectrum grab. This allows you to literally grab a section of the spectrum, and drag it to affect the EQ in the chosen range. You can also view the effects this will have in real time through the spectrum analyser.

Pro Q2 has the inclusion of a piano roll. This allows you to create EQ bands on notes, with the correct frequency corresponding to that particular note (A4 = 440Hz). This can be extremely handy when using pitched elements such as percussion.

Other things include an A/B feature, and plethora of presets in different categories (Drums, Mastering etc),

Three Modes, Three levels of Unparalleled Performance

Pro Q2 features 3 different processing modes, offering an altered sound and performance:

Zero Latency

Zero Latency mode matches the magnitude response of analogue EQ'ing as closely as possible, without introducing any latency. This is the most efficient mode, and is a good choice for when you have a lot of plugins open, or are on an underpowered computer.

Natural Phase

Natural Phase mode is unique to Pro Q2, and offers optimal performance to sound quality. It performs even better than Zero Latency mode, and not only perfectly matches magnitude response of analogue EQ'ing, but also closely matches the analogue phase response. This means it delivers the most accurate frequency response and best sound quality, even at the lowest frequencies and highest bandwidth settings, without introducing noticeable pre-ring or long latency!

Linear Phase

Linear phase mode is not commonly used in most mixing environments, as the nature of this mode can introduce a lot of latency. This is due to phase issues with EQ.

Without getting too technical, EQ's not only change the magnitude of a sound, but it's phase on different frequencies. This phase is usually very subtle and not noticeable however, and phase problems can usually be amended within a DAW in the mixing stage.

Problems can arise in the mastering stage however, as EQ may not be used on the track as a whole, and only on certain sections. This sudden introduction and removal of the EQ may introduce artefacts and other phase related issued that will become audible.

Linear EQ only affects the magnitude of a sound, and NOT the phase. This eliminates any potential issues, but also introduces latency as the sound is passed through the EQ first. The higher the resolution for better quality, the higher the latency. This is why it is not used in mixing, as the latency would cause elements in the track to drift out of time, whereas in the mastering stage there is only one track to process.

To summarise, Pro Q2 does it all, and is a great choice for anyone into music/sound production, in any area.
